Abstract: As the philosopher Will Durant once said,
Civilization exists by geologic consent, subject to
change without notice. The earth has been very kind to
us over the past few centuries, with few of the rapid changes in
environment that have been recorded in the past. Humans have responded by
expanding in number to almost 7.5 billion, now controlling more than half
of Earths surface. However, if some of these catastrophic geologic events
were to occur today, the impacts on humans and humanity could be severe,
bringing about an end to latest in a long line of collapsed civilizations.
However, we humans ourselves have now become the largest agent of geologic
change, and the impacts of our current actions could even greater.

Ezra Pound used to hang a sign over his door announcing the End of the
Christian Era. Perhaps geologists should start hanging a sign that
announces the End of the Cenozoic Era.
